Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite and Kunzite were the four loyal and faithfully devoted generals and bodyguards of Prince Endymion.
The spirits of the Shitennou are held within the gems and are able to appear to Mamoru to tell him to believe in his powers and to protect the princess.
